My cousin came to brunch with us a few weekends ago, sat down, looked around the table at literally four of us in halter necks we didn’t coordinate at all, and just went “is this a uniform.” And like. Kind of? Nobody planned it. We all just independently arrived at the same silhouette because it’s the only thing that survives a two hour brunch without staging a rebellion, and once she said it out loud none of us could unsee it.

Okay so here’s the actual debate, because there is one. Half the group thinks a halter neck is the single best brunch dress that exists, because the tie sits at the back of your neck instead of your shoulders, which means when you’re two mimosas in and slouching into your chair like a teenager, nothing’s digging in and nothing’s slipping down.

The other half thinks that same tie becomes a personal enemy by hour two, because it’s sitting directly on the sunburn you got the day before, or it’s just tight enough that you notice it every single time you reach for the shared fries, which at a long table happens roughly every four minutes.

I will say the getting up and down part is where it either wins completely or falls apart. Bending over to grab your bag off the floor, sliding out of a booth, getting in and out of the car after, that’s the real test, not standing around looking cute for one photo.

The good ones stay put. I had one dress that rode up getting out of an Uber and I did the thing where you’re tugging it down while also trying to look like you weren’t just tugging it down, in front of the valet, who definitely saw.

Spill wise, genuinely no notes, halter necks are weirdly great at this because the open back means when someone knocks a mimosa into your lap you’re not dealing with a soaked collar situation, it’s just your skirt, which, fine, whatever, that’s what napkins and denial are for.

The one I’d call a gamble is the super low back version, the one that looks incredible in photos and slightly like you forgot a layer once you’re actually sitting on a wooden bench for two hours. It photographed perfectly, I filmed a whole get ready with me in it, and then I sat down at the actual table and spent forty minutes readjusting my posture like I was in a job interview. Not for everyone. Genuinely great if you know your brunch spot has soft chairs and no drafts, a real problem if it doesn’t.

Sent the sunburn one to the group chat afterward and got back a single “ouch” and nothing else, which honestly felt about right.
