Okay so this whole debate was supposed to get settled at brunch on a Saturday, and instead it got settled by a heat wave, which is honestly how most fashion arguments in Austin end. Half the group chat was arguing that a black cami dress is the laziest possible pick, a non decision dressed up as a decision, and the other half was arguing that it’s the only thing that survives a summer where getting dressed feels like a personal attack. We had a whole back and forth going, screenshots, someone sending a “this is just a slip, we are not doing this,” and then it hit 104 degrees on the actual Saturday and the argument just evaporated. Nobody won. Everybody wore the cami dress. That’s basically the whole review.

Here’s my actual issue with the category, and I’ll say it, the ironing dread is real. You pull a black cami dress out of a drawer after it’s been folded for three weeks and it looks like it’s been through something. I have stood over an ironing board at 11pm hating a piece of clothing with my whole chest. And then there’s the after the first wash thing nobody warns you about, where the straps that felt substantial in the store suddenly feel like they’re one aggressive hug away from snapping.
The lint situation deserves its own paragraph honestly. I have a dog. Black cami dress plus dog is not a combination, it’s a decision you make every single time you leave the house, and I have left the house looking like I rolled around in a golden retriever more times than I want to admit on the internet.

If you have pets, or you sit on anything upholstered ever, budget an extra four minutes for lint rolling, that’s not optional, that’s just the tax.
The one I actually kept in rotation is the one that photographed the way it felt, which almost never happens for me, usually something looks incredible on camera and then in person it’s doing something weird at the hip. This one did the opposite somehow, looked kind of plain on the phone and then in person people kept asking where it was from.
I will say the satin ones are a gamble. Gorgeous on camera, but if you’re not someone who wants every single body line visible under a light, that’s a specific kind of confidence you need to already have walking in, it’s not going to give it to you.
So where’d we land. Not with anyone admitting they were wrong, just with everyone owning one because the weather made the decision for us. Which honestly feels like the most accurate review I could give you, not a winner, just a piece that showed up right when arguing about it stopped mattering.
