Every single person on this site talks about black block heels like they’re the easy, sensible one in the shoe drawer, the option you can throw on without thinking, and nobody ever pushes back on that, they just nod along, and I’m sick of it. That’s the whole complaint. It sits there unchallenged, year after year, while the shoe itself quietly lies to your feet by hour six.

Here’s what a block heel actually gives you. It photographs like a promise. Ankle looks good, outfit looks pulled together, you snap a mirror pic before you leave the house and think, this is the one, this is the sensible chic era I’ve been promising myself.

Then you wear it to an actual day, an actual night, an actual anything with more than one location, and by the time you’re standing at a bar waiting for a drink you ordered eleven minutes ago, your feet have filed a formal complaint. The block doesn’t wobble, fine, I’ll give it that, it’s not a stiletto trying to end you on cobblestones. But stable isn’t the same as comfortable, and I spent two years assuming they were interchangeable words.

I own four pairs. That’s not a flex, that’s a confession. One pair has been to eleven going out plans that I can count because I still have the group chat, and it survived a spilled Aperol spritz, a cab ride where someone stepped directly on my toe, and one very ambitious dance floor. Another pair got worn exactly twice before I accepted they were a half size too small and I’d lied to myself in the fitting room because they were on sale.

Nobody talks about the lint either. Black suede or black anything, really, becomes a pet hair magnet the second it enters my apartment, and I have a cat who apparently views my shoe rack as a personal linen closet. I keep a lint roller by the front door now, purely for shoes, which is a sentence I never thought I’d type with a straight face.

Style wise, these work with more than people give them credit for, jeans, a slip dress, a boring work pant that needed help. I’ve worn the same pair with four completely different outfits in one week and nobody noticed, which either means they’re great or means nobody’s paying attention, both are probably true.

The gamble pick is the one with the exaggerated square toe, it looks incredible on a friend of mine with narrow feet and looks like a small canoe on me. I bought it anyway. I don’t regret it, but I’m not pretending it’s universal, because it isn’t, and I’m the proof.
