My brother Sam has a joke he won’t drop, which is that I own exactly one “girl dress” and I’ve made him watch me try it on nine separate times before committing to buying it, like it was a load bearing beam and not a piece of fabric. He’s not wrong. Gold midi dresses do this to me. I approach them the way I’d approach a jacket I’m not sure fits across the shoulders, suspicious, methodical, ready to reject it over one bad seam.
The shortlist started at eleven dresses saved across three different tabs, which is an absurd number for a category I claim to be skeptical of. It got cut down fast once I actually tried them on, because gold does something specific under Seattle’s gray light that it doesn’t do in a photo taken somewhere sunny, and half of those eleven went flat and slightly bronze in a way that read more “traffic cone” than “evening out.” Only three survived that test.

The zip is where most of these live or die. One had a side zip so stiff I needed Sam standing there like a spotter at the gym, which is objectively ridiculous for getting dressed to leave the house. The one that stuck around has a back zip long enough to actually reach yourself, which sounds like a low bar until you’ve spent ten minutes with your arm wrenched behind your back questioning your life choices.
Underwear is its own project entirely. Gold fabric shows every seam of a bra you didn’t think about, so I went through a genuinely embarrassing number of options before landing on one strapless thing that stays put, mostly, though I still check it in every reflective surface I pass, which Sam finds hilarious and has started narrating out loud in public.

The length is the real gamble here.

Midi on me hits at a spot that either looks deliberate or looks like the dress shrank in the wash, and it depends entirely on shoes. Flat sandals and I look like I’m heading to a barbecue. A proper heel and suddenly it’s an actual dress, which is a lot of weight to put on footwear, but that’s the deal with this length and I’m not going to pretend otherwise.
I wore mine through one wedding and one work thing that ran long, and it held up both times without creasing at the back in that way cheap gold fabric always seems to, which is the only compliment I actually care about giving it. Would I recommend it to everyone. No. It suits someone willing to fuss over shoes and underwear before they even leave the house. But if that’s you, and apparently it’s me, it earns the closet space.
