Okay so if you rewind like two years, my whole formal dress philosophy was “buy the one that photographs the best in the dressing room mirror under the worst lighting known to man,” and if it survived that lighting I bought it, no other questions asked. That was the era. Everyone was doing it. And now, looking back at that whole stretch of my closet, it’s basically a graveyard of dresses that looked incredible for four seconds in a Zara fitting room and then felt completely wrong the second I actually got to the event.
Because that’s the thing nobody tells you about a formal dress, the wardrobe version and the seven hours later version are basically two different garments. It comes out of the closet looking like a whole personality, you’re feeling yourself, you’re taking the mirror selfie before you even do your makeup, and then you get to hour five of an open bar wedding and suddenly you’re hiking a slit up a staircase and holding your own strap like it’s a part time job.

The one I’ve actually reached for three times this month is a slip style in a kind of wine color, and I was fully prepared to hate it in person because it looked a little bit plain on the hanger, but it’s the one that survived a full night of dancing, a car ride folded in half, and me sitting on a curb waiting for a ride at 1am, and it still looked like I meant it. Sent a photo to the chat before I even got in the car and got back “wait this is actually so good,” which from that group is basically a standing ovation.
The gamble pick, and I’m saying upfront it’s a gamble, is a fully sequined mini I bought for one specific party and have now worn to a second event I probably should not have worn it to.

It films INSANE, like genuinely the best thing I own on camera, catches light in a way that makes every video look expensive. In person, in a room with normal lighting and no phone flash, it’s a lot. Not bad, just a lot. This one’s for someone who wants main character energy and does not care if a stranger’s mom gives her a look across the room.
The thing that’s actually shifted for me isn’t the dress, it’s the test I run it through. I stopped asking “does this look good right now” and started asking “will I still be glad I wore this at the exact moment I’m walking into the room and everyone’s eyes do that quick scan.” That entrance moment is the real test, not the mirror, not the camera roll. The wine one passes every time. The sequin one passes about half the time, which honestly, for how it films, I’m keeping it around.
