Had a whole argument last October about whether beige cardigans are the safest thing a grown woman can own or the exact color of giving up. Never got resolved. A cold front came through Charlotte two days later, I put on the thick one because it was 41 degrees and I had four client fittings, and the argument just quietly died of irrelevance. That’s how most of my beige cardigan opinions end, not with anyone winning, just with the weather making the point for me.

I own three and wear them for three completely different reasons, which took me embarrassingly long to admit was fine instead of a character flaw. The office one lives on the back of my chair at the studio and gets worn over everything, it’s the piece I put on when a client’s running late and I need to look like I have my life together for eleven more minutes.

The one in my bag is the emergency one, folded into a gallon ziploc because I got tired of it smelling like whatever purse chaos surrounds it, and it comes out exclusively for restaurants that keep the AC at what I can only assume is a personal vendetta against women in sleeveless dresses. Labeled a 14, measured it myself, and it’s actually cut generous through the body but tight enough at the wrist that I can’t push the sleeves up, which matters more than it sounds like it should when you’re the one gesturing through a whole fitting.

The third one has tags on it still. Bought it because a client, mid fitting, told me flattering, flattering for who is a question I ask now every time someone says it near me, and I bought the cardigan out of some reflex agreement instead of actually liking it.

It’s a chunky open weave, gorgeous on the hanger, and on my actual body it reads like I’m wearing a throw blanket from someone’s guest room. That’s the gamble pick here. On someone taller, or someone who wants volume up top, it could be the best thing in this whole roundup. On me it’s a $68 lesson in not buying things because a client used a word I’ve banned myself from using unchecked.

What I actually trust, every single time, is the thin one that’s basically a long sleeve tee with buttons. No drama, no debate about whether it reads professional or sloppy, it just works at 6am client calls and again at 9pm when the restaurant’s cold and I forgot a jacket. It’s not exciting to write about. It’s the one I’ve replaced twice because I wore it out, not because I got bored of it, and that’s the only endorsement I actually care about anymore.
