Half of us think a beach dress should go straight over a bare, sandy body with nothing underneath it, and the other half will not leave the house without knowing exactly what bra situation is happening under there, and this argument ran for three days in the group chat before anyone even mentioned a specific dress. I’m team underwear, for the record. I got burned once at a friend’s lake house in a dress with a built in shelf bra that had the structural integrity of a paper towel, and I spent the whole weekend doing the thing where you cross your arms and pretend you’re cold.

The zip is where most of these fall apart, literally in one case. I bought a linen-blend one two summers ago that had a side zip so small and so stiff that I needed my sister to yank it up while I held my breath and a beach bag at the same time, in full view of a parking lot. That is not a vacation, that is a hostage situation with a tan.

The dress I actually wear now has no zip at all, it’s just a shape you step into, and I didn’t know how much I needed that until I didn’t have to ask anyone for help getting dressed on a public beach again.

Salt does something to these fabrics that nobody warns you about. By day four of any trip, the white one I love has a faint ring around the hem like it’s been dipped in weak tea, and the black one somehow looks fine forever, which is deeply unfair and the actual reason half my closet is black. Sun does its own damage too.

I had a coral dress fade to a color I can only describe as “hospital peach” after one week in Tulum, and I wore it anyway because I’d already checked a bag full of it and pride is a real fabric care instruction nobody talks about.

The gamble pick, and I’ll say it plainly, is the crochet one. It’s gorgeous on the right person at the right angle in the right light, and on literally everyone else it reads as a beach themed party costume, mine included some days. I still own it. I still wear it. I have made peace with looking, on occasion, like I’m about to hand someone a mai tai.

What actually works, the thing I’d tell a friend standing in a fitting room texting me a photo, is one you can get in and out of alone, that doesn’t need a specific bra to function, and that looks a little better with a week of salt and sun on it rather than worse. That last part is rare enough that when I find it, I buy two, and I don’t feel bad about it, and nobody in the group chat gets a vote on that one.
