Okay so “best” is doing a LOT of heavy lifting in this post because me and my roommate cannot agree on what that word even means for a belted coat and we’ve been arguing about it since like October. She thinks best means it looks expensive from across a parking lot. I think best means it doesn’t look like a bathrobe cosplay the second you actually tie the belt instead of just letting it hang open like everyone does now. Neither of us has fully won and honestly I don’t think we’re going to, this is a taste fight, not a fit fight, we both agree it fits fine.
I bought the camel one everyone was doing last fall, the really structured double breasted kind, and it is GORGEOUS on camera, like tripod footage looks like a whole editorial, but in real life at a coffee shop it reads a little bit costume-y, a little bit “I am going to a wedding in November,” and my roommate said that exact thing to my face unprompted which I did not appreciate but also could not argue with.
The one I actually reach for daily is a slouchier wool blend, kind of oversized, belt tied loose and low because tying it properly makes me look like I’m delivering a keynote.

It layers over a chunky sweater without a single problem, I’ve tested this, I wore my thickest cable knit under it on a genuinely freezing shoot day and there was zero pulling at the shoulders, it just swallows everything, which some people will read as sloppy and I read as correct.

My roommate calls it a duvet with sleeves. She’s not wrong, I just don’t care.
Sent a photo of both coats to the group chat to settle it once and for all, got back one “the camel one obviously” and one single lowercase “the other one duh” and no consensus, which honestly tracks with how the whole apartment feels about this.
Here’s the actual gamble pick though, a longer belted coat in a shiny almost trench-coat-but-not fabric that I was fully obsessed with for like two weeks because it was everywhere on my feed, wore it once filming and it looked incredible, wore it once to actually run errands and felt like I was in a spy movie nobody asked me to be in. It only really works over a thin top too, anything bulkier underneath and the whole silhouette gets weird and puffy in a way that reads badly in person even though it photographed fine. That one’s not for everybody, I’m not going to pretend it is.
So where’d we land. Structured for the version of you that exists in photos, slouchy for the version of you that exists most days, and if you’ve got the nerve for the shiny one, get it, just don’t say I promised it’d behave.
