There’s a running joke around here about me and the holiday skirt, which is that I buy one every year like it’s a tax I owe the month of December, wear it exactly once, and then act surprised in January when I find it still has the tag tucked into the waistband because I never actually cut it off, just in case. My brother calls it my “annual costume.” He’s not wrong, but he also wore the same gray hoodie to four consecutive holidays, so I don’t take fashion notes from him.

Here’s the thing though, the skirt earns its spot every single year, tag anxiety and all. It’s the one piece I own that does actual work, dresses up in ten minutes flat, doesn’t require me to think about proportions the way a dress does, and photographs better under bad kitchen lighting than anything else in my closet. That’s not nothing when you’re getting your picture taken by someone’s mom holding a phone sideways.

What I could live without is the sizing.

I ordered a satin midi two years ago in my usual size and it sat on me like a pillowcase, returned it, reordered a size down, and that one fit fine until I sat down at dinner and heard a sound I did not want to hear near a table full of relatives. Should’ve returned that one too. Didn’t. Wore it anyway with a cardigan tied around my waist like I was hiding a crime scene, which, functionally, I was.

Tops are where this thing lives or dies. A plain black turtleneck worked every time, boring but it never failed me. A silky button down looked good in the mirror and then untucked itself within the hour, so that got abandoned by nine PM. Tights are their own gamble, I tried the fishnet route once for a work party and spent the entire night convinced everyone could see the run starting at my knee, nobody could, but I never wore them again out of pure principle.

The real gamble pick is the sequined mini a friend of mine wears every year without fail. It’s genuinely a lot, catches light like a disco ball had a baby, and it looks incredible on her specifically because she has the confidence to not care that she’s the brightest object in every room. On me it would read like I lost a bet. That’s the honest truth about this whole category, half of it is fit and half of it is nerve.

Does it get a second season? Rarely, and that’s fine. A skirt that only has to be great once a year is allowed to just be great once. Mine’s already got the tag on.
