There’s a running joke in my house at this point, which is that every summer I announce I’m “not doing velvet in July” and then I do velvet in July, and my mom, who has watched this cycle for at least four garden parties now, just says “mm” in a way that has become its own sentence. I don’t defend myself anymore. I just put the dress on.

Twenty six dollars, thrifted, tag still had the original sixty eight on it, so already the math was doing something to me before I’d even tried it on. Cost per wear so far is around four dollars, which is fine, respectable even, except I’m the one who has to survive the actual afternoon in it, and a burgundy velvet dress in direct sun for four hours is a decision, not an outfit.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you about velvet outdoors.

It photographs like a dream and behaves like a small furnace. I stood through a friend’s engagement thing in a backyard in June, full sun till five, and I have the photos to prove I looked completely composed while internally negotiating with my own sweat glands. The zip on this one sits at the side, hidden in a seam, fine when it works, less fine when the fabric bunches at the top and you’re doing that elbow contortion alone in a bathroom hoping nobody knocks.

Underwear took me three tries. Velvet shows every seam, every line, every bit of lace like it’s trying to advertise it, so I ended up in the most boring seamless nude thing I own, which felt like a personal defeat given how much drama the dress itself was bringing.

Nighttime is where this dress earns its keep.

In daylight it reads almost brown, a little flat, kind of sad honestly. Under string lights or that hour after sunset it goes properly burgundy, deep and a little dangerous looking, and that’s the version everyone compliments, which tells you the outdoor daytime garden party is actually the hardest setting for this exact color, not the easiest.

I’ll say the gamble part out loud. This is not a safe pick for everyone. If you run hot, if you’re self conscious about sweat rings on dark fabric in front of a crowd, or if your idea of a garden party ends before six, skip it. It’s built for the version of the day that stretches into evening, when the light does the work the dress can’t do on its own.

Good column for the year, buy number six I think, though I said that about a coat in March I’ve technically worn twice. Velvet in July remains a bad idea I will keep having.
