Nearly everyone in my life who has seen this cardigan agrees it’s the best forty dollars I’ve spent this year. My mother, who does not compliment clothing on principle, texted “that’s a good color on you, wear it more” after seeing it in a video call background, which is the highest rating my mother’s ever issued anything I own. The one holdout is the woman two desks over, who took one look and said it read “a little bit game show host” under fluorescent light, and honestly, I can’t fully argue with her, because there is a version of this gold that catches office lighting and gives off a faint medal ceremony energy I did not budget for.

Here’s the case I built for it anyway, cost per wear style, the way I’d justify anything with a number attached. I’ve worn it eleven times in six weeks, which is a genuinely embarrassing amount for one cardigan, and every single time it was for absolutely nothing, no client meeting, no dinner, just a Tuesday that needed one non depressing element. That’s the real test for this category.

Not whether it survives a big event, but whether it survives the days that have no event at all, the ones where you’re in leggings by 6pm and the cardigan is doing the entire job of making you look like a person who got dressed on purpose.

I ran it through the wash on a whim, no separate bag, no special anything, just tossed it in with a load of towels because I was tired and didn’t feel like babying a sweater, and it came out of the dryer basically unchanged, which I did not expect and will not be repeating on purpose but was relieved about anyway. The shape held. No pilling, no stretched out cuffs hanging past my hands like I borrowed it from someone taller.

The shine is the actual argument in my apartment. Half the people who’ve seen it in person think it’s subtle, a warm metallic that reads more “expensive candle” than “trophy,” and the other half think it is, factually, too much for a Tuesday client call, that it throws a reflection on camera under the wrong light and makes me look like I’m sitting in front of a window I’m not sitting in front of. Both opinions are correct depending entirely on your lighting setup, which nobody tells you when you’re standing in a fitting room deciding this in isolation from your actual desk lamp.

I’ll be honest about who this is for. If you already wear a lot of color and don’t flinch at being the brightest thing in a room of black blazers, buy it, you’ll wear it constantly. If you’ve spent your whole career in navy and gray because it’s safe, this will feel like a costume for the first two weeks, and then, if my texts are any evidence, you’ll stop noticing and just call it your favorite sweater. I built a whole spreadsheet case for owning this. The real reason I kept wearing it was that gold made a Tuesday feel less like a Tuesday, and that’s not a return I know how to calculate, but I’m counting it anyway.
