My friend Marisol won this argument about a month ago and I’m still salty about it, which tells you everything about how these conversations usually go on our end. She’d been saying for years that beige reads as “office coward color,” the thing you wear when you’ve given up on having a personality before 9am, and I’ve been saying it’s the one shirt that never fights with anything else you own. She settled it by wearing the exact same blouse to a brunch and a work happy hour on the same Saturday, texted me two photos, one in patio light looking like actual cream silk, one under my kitchen ceiling light looking like a manila folder with sleeves, and said “this is the whole problem, Taylor, it’s not one color, it’s two colors pretending to be one.” I don’t have a counter to that. I’ve conceded. Most of us have conceded. There is one holdout on this who still insists her beige has never once looked institutional and I think she owns a different beige than the rest of us are talking about, honestly, at this point it might be a different word.

Here’s what actually matters though, the buttons. I bought one of these secondhand off a resale app for a laughably specific reason, the listing photos showed the buttons up close and they were mismatched by like half a shade, which told me it had been re buttoned at some point, probably after losing one, which meant it had been worn enough to lose one, which meant somebody actually wore this thing and didn’t just hang it in a closet as an idea.

I checked the button spacing before I even looked at the price, because gaping at the chest when you sit down is the single fastest way a blouse goes from “put together” to “I need to excuse myself to the bathroom immediately,” and this one had a button placed exactly where the pull happens when you fold into a chair. That’s not luck, that’s someone who designed it having sat down at least once in their life.

Would I wear it on a random Tuesday, no plans, nothing to prove? Honestly, yes, but only the one that survived the kitchen light test, not every beige earns that. The gamble pick is the one with the exaggerated collar, it photographs incredible and on the wrong body it reads costume, I know this because I own it and I am the wrong body about forty percent of the time depending on my mood.

I keep chasing the same high from that first bag hunt, the ten percent price, the almost losing it, and somewhere in there I bought a blouse mostly because I almost didn’t get it. I still wear it. That’s not an endorsement, that’s a confession.
