Okay so burgundy is either the most sophisticated color a shirt dress can come in or it’s giving “I peaked in a wine bar in 2019,” and I need you to know that’s a real fight we had, not a vibe, an actual fight, over text, about a COLOR.

I bought the first one on a whim after seeing it on my feed roughly nine hundred times in one week, which, yes, I know, the algorithm picked it before I did, I’m not pretending otherwise. Tags off, mirror check, and it did that thing where a color you were unsure about suddenly makes total sense once it’s actually on you instead of on a screen. It’s deep enough that it reads almost neutral in low light and then absolutely does NOT read as neutral the second you step outside, full richness, very much a color that announces itself. I sent the photo before I’d even zipped my boots and got one “okay wait that’s actually so good” and one single skull emoji with zero follow up text, and both of those people were looking at the same dress.

That’s the thing nobody warns you about with this color specifically, it’s not a fit argument, the shirt dress shape is forgiving on basically everyone, belt it or don’t, roll the sleeves or don’t.

It’s a taste argument. Half the people I know think burgundy looks expensive and grown up. The other half think it looks like a restaurant uniform, and I genuinely can’t fully talk either side out of it because I’ve felt both ways about it in the same afternoon.

By hour six of actually wearing it out, walking around, sitting in it, the verdict shifted again. It didn’t wrinkle in the way I was bracing for, survived a coffee refill situation that could’ve gone very badly, and still looked like a decision at 8pm instead of a mistake I was stuck in.

That part I did not see coming. What I did see coming, correctly, was that it wanted almost nothing else doing the talking, gold hoops, black boots, done, the one time I tried a printed scarf with it my camera roll from that day is basically a cautionary tale I don’t revisit.

I will say the lighter, almost dusty burgundy version is the gamble pick here. Gorgeous on the right undertone, slightly costume-y on the wrong one, I watched it happen in real time on a friend of mine who is objectively stylish and it just didn’t land, and neither of us could explain exactly why.

We never fully resolved the original argument honestly. I think it’s sophisticated. Someone in my group chat still thinks it’s a menu. We’re both still wearing it.
