Okay so basically everyone on this team is obsessed with the cream pleated skirt and there’s one holdout who thinks it’s a laundry emergency waiting to happen, and I want to say she’s wrong but she’s also the one who spilled an entire vodka soda down a white bag in March so maybe she’s speaking from trauma, not preference.

Here’s the thing about the cream pleated skirt though. It photographs like it has a publicist. Under any kind of warm light, restaurant bathroom, string lights, that weird gold flash on someone’s phone at 11pm, it just moves, the pleats catch and swing and suddenly you look like you have a plan for your life. I filmed a get ready with me in one and had to redo the intro three times because I kept getting distracted watching it move in the mirror instead of actually talking.

The moment it earns its place is genuinely always the same moment, it’s the walk from the car to wherever you’re going, the one stretch of night where you’re not sitting down and not squished into a booth, just moving through it.

That’s the whole performance. The moment it starts to annoy is thirty minutes later when you sit down and have to do the little tuck under your thighs so you don’t crease the front into something that looks like an accordion for the rest of the night. I’ve done that tuck in front of a bouncer. Not my finest moment but also not my last time doing it.

Top wise, we tried a fitted black bodysuit first because obviously, and it was fine, it was just also what literally every single person in that skirt has already tried, my group chat sent back a photo of someone else in the exact same combo within the hour, one skull emoji, no words.

What actually worked better was something with more shape up top, a corset style piece or even a slouchy knit tucked in weird on purpose, because the skirt is already doing so much movement you don’t need your top fighting it too.

Tights were its own whole saga. Sheer black felt too office holiday party. Bare legs in December is a lifestyle choice I do not have the circulation for. The winner ended up being a slightly opaque nude tone, which sounds boring typed out but on camera reads like your legs are just doing great, no effort, no visible tights at all.

I’ll say the honest part, this is not a skirt for someone who eats or drinks with any confidence, cream shows everything, I watched a single drop of red wine become a whole storyline once. If you’re clumsy, genuinely think about it. But if you’re not, or you don’t care, it’s one of those pieces that makes the whole night look better than it probably was, and honestly that might be the actual point of a night out.
