My mom and I had a whole argument about beige dresses going into a wedding this spring, her saying it’s “resort wear pretending to be respectful,” me saying beige is just neutral and neutral is smart shopping. Neither of us backed down. Then it rained sideways for four hours during the ceremony and everyone was in ponchos over their dresses anyway, and the argument just sort of evaporated because it stopped mattering what anyone was wearing under a trash bag. That’s the thing about beige, half the fights about it aren’t really about the dress, they’re about the event, and the event usually settles it before either person has to admit anything.
Here’s my honest math on the one I actually kept. Thirty one dollars at the store on the corner, worn nine times since May, that’s three dollars and forty four cents a wear, which I had to redo twice because I kept landing on four dollars and something and getting annoyed about it.

Nine times isn’t nothing for a dress in one color that photographs like a paper bag half the time.
Because that’s the real complaint, and it’s not wrong. In daylight, on a sidewalk, this thing looks expensive, almost stone colored, a little bit architect-who-only-wears-neutrals. Under the yellow lights in my kitchen it goes flat and slightly institutional, like a folder from HR. I’ve genuinely stood in front of my bathroom mirror wondering if I’m about to be handed a name tag.
Sitting down in it is fine.

Bending over to grab something off the floor of the car, less fine, there’s a seam at the waist that lets you know it’s there if you’re not careful, and I’ve done the little hunch-walk to a restaurant table more than once holding my own hem like I’m being handed a diploma. Getting in and out of a low car in it is a two hand job, one for the door, one for the dress, and if you’ve got groceries too you’re just going to drop something, that’s not a maybe.
I’d pay more for a beige dress with an actual lining, I’ve said this before about other things and I’ll say it again here, some fabrics need help and beige shows every static cling and every underwear line without one. This one didn’t have it and I got lucky.
I’ll say the quiet part too, beige on me specifically, next to my skin tone, is a gamble every single time, some days I look rested and some days I look like I’ve been up since four doing inventory. I bought it anyway. The math worked. My mom still doesn’t fully trust the color, but she wasn’t arguing about the dress that day, she was arguing about the rain, and so was I.

[…] So this isn’t a safe pick for everyone, and I’d rather say that than pretend every beige dress flatters every person under every light, because it doesn’t, and the ones that do are usually […]
