I refreshed a resale search for a gold puff sleeve dress at 7am on a Tuesday because a friend once told me that’s when people list stuff after cleaning out a closet on Sunday, then panic and post it two days later once the guilt sets in. I have no evidence this is true. I believe it anyway. Found one at 7:14, a mustard gold thing with sleeves like two dinner rolls, saw it, refreshed to check it was still there, it was, put it in my cart, lost it to checkout in the time it took me to verify the seller had actual sale history. Someone typed faster than me on a Tuesday morning. I don’t know her.

Genuinely well done to her.

Half of us think the sleeve is the whole point of the dress, the bigger the better, you want it announcing itself before you’ve said hello to anyone. The other half think past a certain volume it stops being a sleeve and starts being a structural problem, specifically the problem of whether a jacket goes over it at all, and the answer for most of these is no, it does not, you will be doing the thing where you drape a cardigan over your shoulders like you’re at a wedding in 1997 because there was nowhere else for it to go.

Nobody warned me about the grass.

Heels sink, obviously, everyone knows that, but I didn’t know how much until I was standing on a lawn at a garden party in June watching my heel disappear an inch at a time like the ground was slowly eating me, holding a glass of something warm, trying to look like this was fine. Block heel saved me the second time. Sandals with any real height did not make it past the second lawn.

The dress itself I did eventually get, a different gold one, three weeks later, at 11pm on a Sunday from someone clearly mid closet purge, and the stitching on the sleeve gathering was tight and even in a way that told me it wasn’t a rushed job, checked that before I even looked at the price, which is exactly the order my priorities go in. Wore it with flat sandals and a thin slip underneath because the fabric ran a little see through in direct sun, learned that one the hard way standing near a window at the actual party.

The gamble here is real and I’ll say it straight, this is not a dress for someone who wants to blend in at a party, it’s for someone who wants to be the specific person other guests mention afterward, good or not. Not everyone wants that job. I did, once I had it, though I’ll admit some of the wanting was just relief that I’d finally beaten the algorithm to something, and that’s not really a reason to love a dress, it’s just the reason I own this one.
